Ice cream is a wonderful treat, practically impossible to imagine a hot summer without. This sweet frozen treat comes in a wide variety of flavors. This vast variety has earned it a cult following across the globe.
Not only children but also adults can't resist this delicious sweet dessert. Almost everyone loves it, but they know little about it. For example, what is ice cream made of? What types are there, and what are the differences between them? This article will help you find answers to the most frequently asked questions about ice cream.
Types of ice cream
Today, there are many types of ice cream, each with its own advantages. To better understand this summer dessert, it's important to understand how it can be classified.
By type of preparation and place of production
- Ice cream produced for mass consumption. This delicacy is produced only in large factories and plants and then distributed to retail outlets for sale to the public.
- Homemade ice cream is a dessert that is made at home, either by hand or by machine (using an ice cream maker).
- Signature ice cream refers to desserts with unique recipes, created by chefs and culinary experts.
By packaging type
Ice cream can be divided into three types based on packaging: bulk, small, and loose. The first type includes the treat often referred to as "family" ice cream. It's typically available in large volumes and is packaged in buckets and containers of various shapes, as well as in plastic bags and trays.
Small-batch ice cream is the most common type of ice cream. It's all about convenience—you choose the perfect-sized cone and enjoy its delicious flavor. The most popular packaging options are cups and cones (waffle, plastic, or paper). Small-batch ice cream is also sold as bricks, bars, and popsicles, both coated and uncoated.

Loose ice cream is packaged in cardboard or metal containers for sale in cafes, restaurants, and other specialty locations. It has a softer consistency and comes in a variety of flavors.
By consistency
- Hardened ice cream. It is produced exclusively in factories and plants. It is frozen to sufficiently low temperatures to increase its stability and shelf life.
- Soft-serve ice cream. Unlike hardened ice cream, this type of ice cream is not frozen. It has a creamy consistency and is usually served in individual servings (in a bowl, waffle cone, etc.). This dessert is found in restaurants and cafes and should be eaten immediately.
By composition
- Plombir (ice cream). It's made with milk, cream, sugar, and eggs. In addition to the basic ingredients, it can also contain fruit, nuts, toppings, or cocoa. However, due to this composition, plombir is high in calories. Therefore, it's definitely not suitable for those who are watching their weight carefully.

- Milk and cream ice cream. Many believe there's no difference between plombir and these types of ice cream. However, this isn't true. The main difference is the amount of milk fat in their composition. Milk ice cream has a fat content of 1 to 7%, while cream ice cream has a fat content of 7 to 15%. These summer treats are similarly sweet to plombir. However, due to their lower milk fat content, they're not as smooth and chewy.

- Sorbet. This ice cream is considered not only the most dietary, but also the healthiest type of ice cream. It's low in calories and made exclusively from pure berry or fruit puree.

- Sherbet. This dessert is a combination of creamy ice cream and sorbet. It requires cream or milk, as well as natural fruit juice or berry puree. This combination makes the ice cream incredibly smooth yet rich. It's also worth noting that sherbet is the only ice cream that can contain alcohol.

- Frozen juice. Many children adore this treat, as it comes in a wide variety of fruit flavors. Frozen juice is made from fruit, a small amount of puree, water, and sugar. Sometimes you can find desserts with the addition of jelly, toppings, and marmalade. Even though this ice cream is dairy-free, it still contains a lot of calories due to the added sugar.

To taste
Ice cream comes in a variety of flavors, aromas, and colors. Children often choose a colorful treat, while adults choose the dessert that best suits their taste preferences.
The most famous and popular ice cream flavors include:
- Fruit. Contains fruit puree as its base. May contain whole fruit pieces and may be topped with jams and toppings.
- Vanilla.
- Chocolate. A dessert made with cocoa.
- Mint with chocolate chips. Ice cream with added mint and chocolate chips (chocolate drops can also be used).
- Crème brûlée. A caramel treat that has a similar flavor to the dessert of the same name.

Ice cream is one of the most popular desserts in the world. Its appearance and amazing taste have won hearts around the world for years. Many chefs create their own recipes for this dessert, allowing people to enjoy its new and exquisite flavors.
In his video, the author of the "Culinary TOP" channel invites you to discover the 10 most delicious types of ice cream in the world. This video will help you discover which delicacy is most famous in Turkey, what makes Palates ice cream so famous, and which dessert is most popular in India.
5 of the most unusual types of ice cream
- Onion ice cream. To make it, onions are chopped, combined with sugar, and fried in olive oil. Then, they're mixed with milk, cream, and egg, and then blended. Although the combination seems unimaginable, onion ice cream has a uniquely delicate, sweet, and piquant flavor.

- Gold ice cream. This summer dessert is found only on the menus of prestigious restaurants, as it's made with edible gold. The price of this dessert may seem prohibitive to many, as a single serving in the US costs at least $800. However, some are willing to pay such a premium for this indulgence. After all, the added gold is said to cleanse the body and improve liver function.

- Spicy ice cream. This delicacy can be found in Scottish cafes. It's so spicy that customers must sign a waiver before trying it. The creators of this dessert named it "Devil's Breath." They claim it's hundreds of times hotter than even the hottest sauce.

- Breast milk ice cream. Yes, such a delicacy really does exist. It first appeared on sale in 2011 at a London café. Some customers said it was the best ice cream they'd ever tried. However, this dessert is no longer available. The product was deemed dangerous and its sale was banned.

- Stinky ice cream. Everyone associates ice cream with a sweet taste and pleasant aroma. That's why the Japanese dessert "Dracula" might seem like the strangest treat in the world. The reason is that it's made with garlic, which gives the treat its distinctive flavor and aroma.

Every day, the world sees the emergence of more and more unique and interesting ice cream recipes. Each one boasts its own distinct flavor and preparation method. But despite the vast variety, my favorite version of this dessert is the classic plombir. What's your favorite ice cream flavor? Share your thoughts in the comments!
