There are two disputed theories about the origin of doughnuts in the United States. The first claims that sailor Hanson Crockett Gregory was dissatisfied with the fact that Austrian doughnuts were uncooked in the center and always remained raw. So, he decided to make a hole in the center to allow the right amount of oil to flow through when frying.

According to a second legend, the origins of American doughnuts can be traced back to the Wampanoag Indian tribe. It says that a boy fleeing from persecution was holding a pancake that had been shot by an arrow. This inspired chefs to create doughnuts with a hole in the center.

What is the difference between a donut and a classic doughnut?

Donuts or American donuts with a hole They differ from classic donuts in shape and the absence of filling. Thanks to the addition of milk, eggs, and butter to the dough, donuts are light and airy, with a dense yet soft crust on the outside. They are usually made with yeast dough, but with a minimal amount of sugar. After all, all the sweetness of the dessert is hidden in the colored fondant or chocolate glaze with the addition of various colors.

A must-have for donuts is not only icing but also a generous sprinkling of sprinkles. Regular domestic doughnuts, however, are usually dusted with powdered sugar.

Step 5

Cut about 20-22 squares of parchment paper, slightly larger than the donut cutter. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 1.5 cm. Cut out donuts using 8 cm and 3 cm round cutters and place them on the parchment squares. Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and let the donuts rise in the oven for 1 hour with the light on.

Step 9

The Donuts are ready. Dip them first in the glaze, then in the sprinkles. Let them sit for 20 minutes to dry completely, then serve with tea.
