Beneficial properties of basil
Basil, or regano, is a spicy herb native to India that has gained popularity in Europe, the Caucasus, and Asia. It can be used to make a summer drink or a vitamin-rich preserve, but it is most often used as a spice. There are approximately seventy varieties of basil, the most famous of which are green, purple, and Thai.
Basil contains vitamins A, C, B2, PP, carotene, rutin, and eugenol. Thanks to the latter, basil has strong antibacterial properties, acts as an antispasmodic, and has a tonic effect.
Interestingly, this Indian herb contains omega-3 fatty acids, which strengthens the immune system.
Why is basil dangerous?
Basil leaves contain mercury compounds. Large amounts of these compounds can have a negative impact on the body. It is not recommended to consume basil if you:
- pregnant;
- have cardiovascular diseases;
- suffer from epilepsy or diabetes.
Giving basil to children under seven years of age is not recommended, as the plant can cause gastrointestinal irritation and poisoning. Individual intolerance to basil should also be taken into account.
