Preparation

Step 1

Pour warm kefir into a deep bowl, add egg, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, salt and baking powder.

Step 2

Mix quickly until smooth, then gradually add the flour, continuing to mix. As the flour is absorbed, add the next portion and stir with a spoon until a thick dough forms.

Step 3

Dust a work surface with flour and transfer the dough to it. Knead it with your hands, kneading and gathering it into a ball until it remains soft and no longer sticks to your fingers. Then, roll it out to a thickness of about 5-7 mm, but do not roll it out with a rolling pin.

Step 4

Cut out large donut circles, then cut out the centers. Knead the remaining dough and cut out more donuts, leaving no excess.

Step 5

Heat the sunflower oil and, as soon as it starts to bubble, drop the donuts in. Fry them over medium heat for a few minutes on each side. Flip them over with forks—this is the easiest way to do this.

Step 6

The kefir-and-oil donuts are ready. Place them on a paper towel to drain off any excess oil, then arrange them in layers on a serving dish and dust with powdered sugar.

Citrus donuts with kefir
If you want to add variety to the flavor of your donuts, you can add the zest of any citrus fruit you have at home instead of vanilla: lemon, orange, tangerine, or even lime.
Alcohol for donuts
Add 1 teaspoon of cognac, rum, or liqueur, which will act as an excellent flavoring agent, dramatically changing the taste of the fried dough. The alcohol will completely evaporate during frying. However, the texture of the finished rings will become softer and more tender. And the dough itself will be infused with the aroma of high-quality alcohol.
Flavored sprinkles for donuts
Fried rings can be dusted with more than just powdered sugar. For starters, you can mix it with vanilla sugar, cinnamon, and other spices to add new flavors. Powdered sugar can also be replaced with any glaze or topping. You can also top them with nuts, sugar, coconut, or chocolate shavings.

Try decorating your donuts in different ways. Even the simplest recipe will take on a whole new dimension.
