Caesar salad, one of the most popular dishes in the world, originates from American cuisine. The recipe is based on wheat croutons, romaine lettuce, and grated Parmesan cheese. A special dressing, prepared specifically for the salad, gives the dish its distinctive flavor.

Thanks to its widespread popularity, the dish has now spawned numerous interpretations. In addition to the classic recipe, there are variations with smoked or fried chicken, Chinese cabbage, sour cream or yogurt sauces, and even chicken nuggets. Experimenting with the recipe allows the salad to never get boring and continually delight the taste buds. Here's a selection of the most interesting and unexpected interpretations of the beloved Caesar salad.

What do you need for a Caesar salad?

If your store doesn't have the ingredients called for in a salad recipe, don't worry. Experienced chefs and resourceful home cooks have long since found successful substitutes.

Lettuce leaves

The classic Caesar salad recipe uses crisp romaine lettuce leaves. This ingredient imparts a savory, nutty, and spicy flavor to the dish. Both the outer leaves and the softer inner leaves are used. The thick "ribs" of the lettuce are removed, as they impart a bitter taste.

If you're having trouble finding romaine lettuce on your grocery store shelves, don't despair—it can be substituted with more affordable options. Some home cooks use iceberg lettuce, a mix of other lettuce leaves, and even Chinese cabbage to make Caesar salad. With the right dressing, the dish retains virtually all of its flavor while being more affordable and accessible.

Refueling

This is a special component of the salad. It's the dressing that adds zest and originality to the dish.

If you want a true Caesar salad, don't be lazy about making the right dressing. A classic dressing includes lightly boiled eggs, garlic, fish sauce, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, Parmesan cheese, and Dijon mustard.

If you're not particularly keen on making the salad look like a classic, make a dressing using ready-made mayonnaise and spices. You can also find ready-made dressings specifically designed for Caesar salad in stores these days.

Cheese

Parmesan cheese is the cheese used in the classic Caesar salad recipe. However, when making a Caesar salad at home, you can use regular hard cheese. Dieters can substitute Parmesan with lower-fat cheeses.

These are the main ingredients. The salad is often complemented with shrimp and chicken fillet, and garnished with cherry tomatoes and quail eggs.

Who invented the Caesar salad and why is it called that?

Lettuce, Parmesan, croutons, eggs, and Worcestershire sauce—a classic light salad recipe that's popular all over the world.

The history of this dish, which is over eighty years old, has nothing to do with the Roman emperor. The recipe was created by Caesar Cardini.

It is known that the young man and his brother moved to the United States, where they started their own business—opening a small restaurant. The establishment enjoyed great popularity because, despite Prohibition, it sold alcoholic beverages. The reason was that the establishment was not in the United States, but in Mexico, which allowed them to profit from the sale of alcohol.

One day, a large crowd of guests descended on the restaurant. The owners weren't prepared for such an influx of customers. All supplies were gone, and nearby stores were emptied. Caesar Cardini had to quickly come up with something to feed the guests. He used everything he had in the pantry: garlic, romaine lettuce, vegetable oil, eggs, cheese, lemon juice, herbs, croutons, and Worcestershire sauce. Thus, the salad, named after its creator—Caesar Salad—was born. The tipsy guests were delighted with this appetizer!

In the early 1950s, the salad was even voted the best American recipe of the last 50 years.
