How to decorate a cake for a children's party?
Content
A cake is the highlight of any children's party. It's best to bake it yourself, as store-bought ones can be harmful to a child. At the same time, they are very beautiful. Many people think they won't be able to create something as interesting. Rest assured: decorating children's cakes is an art that any mother or grandmother can master!
Decorating ideas
- The most common approach is to decorate your pastry masterpiece with cream. This leaves a lot of room for imagination, and the properties of different creams dictate different decorative solutions. Use the recipes below, food coloring, a pastry syringe or cone, and special drawing tips.
- You can also beautifully decorate a cake with fruits and berries. It's both vibrant and healthy. You can create fruit layers by assembling the cake from layers; this will look festive when cut into pieces. You can also decorate the top with fruit; it's a matter of taste and imagination: arrange berry designs, cut flowers from larger fruits, etc.
- A fresh idea is to decorate with fruit in jelly. The advantage of this solution is the durable coating. It will be both beautiful and practical if you need to take the cake to a special event. Since it's difficult to create a specific design with jelly, you'll have to cover the entire surface. Fruit, however, can be used to create both a message and a meaningful design.
- Extravagant decoration with toys. While not all adults like this kind of decoration, children are usually delighted. Girls are especially fond of it if the cake is made to look like a real doll's skirt. Use only new, thoroughly washed, and safe toys, protect them from the confectionery mixture, and ensure they don't come into contact with the cake (for example, by wrapping the bottom of the doll in plastic wrap). Then, shape the cake into a skirt-shaped mound.
- Fondant decoration. Children love sweets decorated with these kinds of figures. Of course, you can buy ready-made fondant figures. They can be purchased according to the number of children invited and placed on the cake topper, surrounded by a circle of sliced fruit or amidst a sprinkle of nuts. At home, making your own figures can be challenging without experience and skill. But you don't have to start with something complicated. Simple shapes will also delight a child.
How to make mastic at home
For simple figures, use powdered sugar, powdered milk, and condensed milk. Mix them in equal parts until you have a sticky paste. You can color it with any food coloring. Remember that fondant dries quickly, so cover the part you're not working with with plastic wrap.
For complex figures:
- Powdered sugar – 500 gr.
- Gelatin 10 gr.
- Water – 80 gr.
- Citric acid (on the tip of a knife).
Dissolve the gelatin in water and then mix everything together. Roll the mixture out like dough on cling film, dust it with powdered sugar, and cut out the shapes you want to decorate your cake with. Glue the pieces together with water. Allow the decorations to dry. Keep them small to prevent cracking.
Types and recipes of creams for decoration
- Buttercream. The advantage is that it holds its shape for a long time and doesn't spread because it's thick. The disadvantage is that it's greasy, which isn't exactly healthy for children. Therefore, use in moderation. This type of buttercream is often used to create designs on cakes.
Take 225g of butter and beat it with 250g of powdered sugar for 3 minutes. Add milk and gradually add another 250g of powdered sugar. Bring to the desired consistency and you're ready to decorate!
- Protein cream. Pros: lighter, less harmful, and very flexible, allowing you to create not just individual decorative elements but entire paintings. The cream is easily colored with food coloring, including natural ones (beetroot, juice, etc.).
Cook in a double boiler. Add a quarter teaspoon of citric acid and 170 grams of sugar to the whites of three eggs. Beat with a whisk (right over the double boiler) until thick, about 10 minutes. Remove from the boiler and continue whisking (the cream will now be very thick and airy). You can decorate with a syringe once the cream has cooled.
- A creamy sour cream frosting. It's delicate, delicious, and beautiful, but it doesn't hold its shape, so it can only be used to decorate a cake as a topping. This frosting is great for hiding any imperfections in the cake layers when layering them. It's also great for covering irregularly shaped cakes, hiding the seams.
Ingredients: 1 cup of 20% heavy cream, 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar, 4 tablespoons of 20% sour cream, 1 packet of vanilla sugar. Place the cream and sour cream in a saucepan with ice water or ice. Whip with a whisk or a mixer at low speed until stiff peaks form. Continue whisking, gradually adding the powdered sugar and vanilla sugar. The custard is ready!
- Chocolate icing is used for coating. To make a cake covered with chocolate icing or buttercream more attractive, use a stencil: cut out any design from paper and sift powdered sugar, cocoa powder, or grated chocolate through it.
You can also decorate with ready-made confectionery, such as chocolate-covered seeds or various candies. You can use them to draw various animals or write a wish.
For the glaze, take 50g of butter, 1/4 cup of milk, 100g of chocolate, and 4 tbsp of sugar. Mix the butter, sugar, and milk together, then add the chopped chocolate. Place in a double boiler and stir until smooth. This glaze sets quickly and easily.
Of course, decorating confectionery in general, and children's cakes in particular, isn't limited to the ideas and recipes listed above. But you can always find classic or extravagant solutions—the main thing is the desire to make a beautifully decorated, homemade cake!
